Land UHT Milk by Vita Dairy (ABRAZEN L.L.C.) Recalled in Kosovo Over Excessive Aflatoxin M1 — 27.5 Tons Destroyed

The Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has ordered the immediate withdrawal from the market of Land UHT milk 3.2%, produced by Vita Dairy, operated by ABRAZEN L.L.C., after competent authorities in North Macedonia detected aflatoxin M1 above the permitted safety limit.

 

According to information released by the AUV, North Macedonian authorities identified excessive levels of aflatoxin M1 in the product and subsequently stopped two shipments of UHT milk imported from Kosovo. The combined weight of the two consignments was 27,520 kilograms, as local media reports.

Land UHT Milk Ordered Off the Market in Kosovo

Following the official notification, the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency instructed that the affected Land UHT 3.2% milk be removed from the Kosovo market.

The agency has also launched official inspections and a traceability investigation to determine the distribution and movement of the affected product.

The AUV said the measures were taken under Kosovo's Food Law, which considers food containing mycotoxins above permitted limits to be harmful and unsafe for human consumption.

27.5 Tons of Milk Destroyed in North Macedonia

North Macedonia's food and veterinary inspection services reportedly halted the import of two shipments of UHT milk from Kosovo last week after laboratory testing detected aflatoxin levels exceeding the permitted limits.

The milk was reportedly intended for sale through a retail supermarket chain in North Macedonia.

After the non-compliance was confirmed, the entire quantity—27,520 kilograms of milk—was destroyed under the supervision of an official veterinarian at the Drisla landfill.

Samples Taken Under Food Safety Monitoring Program

The laboratory samples were collected as part of North Macedonia's official monitoring program, which includes checks on imported food products of animal origin.

The detection of excessive aflatoxin M1 triggered intervention by the competent authorities and ultimately led to the destruction of the affected consignments.

Aflatoxin M1 is a toxic metabolite associated with aflatoxin B1 exposure in livestock and can enter milk. Because of its potential health risks, regulatory authorities impose strict maximum limits on its presence in milk and dairy products.

Authorities to Determine Further Measures Against the Producer

The Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency said it will work together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development and the Ministry of Health to determine further measures concerning facility RKS-014 – ABRAZEN L.L.C. (Vita Dairy).

The AUV has also said that the public will be informed about additional measures and further developments concerning the case.

The incident highlights the importance of systematic food-safety monitoring, particularly for products of animal origin moving across borders. While the affected shipments were stopped and destroyed in North Macedonia, the subsequent withdrawal order in Kosovo is intended to establish whether any potentially non-compliant products had already entered the domestic market.
