Kosovo Publishes Preliminary List of 13,190 War Victims and Missing Persons 27 Years After 1998–1999 Conflict

 Twenty-seven years after the end of the Kosovo War, authorities have presented the first preliminary version of a list documenting 13,190 people killed and missing during the 1998–1999 conflict.

 

The list was prepared by the Kosovo Institute for War Crimes, as part of an ongoing process aimed at documenting, verifying, and preserving evidence related to the victims of the last war in Kosovo.

According to Kosovo institutions, the preparation of the database involved collecting, comparing, and verifying information from multiple sources in order to create a reliable record of those who lost their lives or disappeared during the conflict.

Verification Process Continues

The preliminary list was presented during a consultation meeting attended by representatives of state institutions, experts, academics, and civil society organizations.

Officials emphasized that the current version is not considered final, as the verification process will continue in the coming phases. Additional information will be reviewed and updated in cooperation with institutions, researchers, experts, and families of victims.

Importance for Historical Memory and Justice

Kosovo authorities stated that documenting war victims is essential for preserving historical memory, supporting justice processes, and creating an accurate database reflecting the human consequences of the 1998–1999 war.

The publication of the list comes more than two decades after the conflict, during a period when efforts to establish a complete record of victims and missing persons remain a key issue for Kosovo society and institutions.
