European Parliament to Serbia: Normalize Relations with Kosovo or Forget EU Membership

The European Parliament has delivered a clear message to Serbia: there can be no meaningful progress toward European Union membership without the normalization of relations with Kosovo.

In a statement published on social media, the European Parliament stressed that Belgrade must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the European Union's core values by implementing reforms that strengthen the rule of law, democratic institutions, and fundamental freedoms.

"Serbia must demonstrate a real commitment to the values of the European Union. Progress toward EU membership is possible only through reforms in the rule of law and the strengthening of democratic standards. Serbia must normalize its relations with Kosovo," the European Parliament said.

The statement underscores that Serbia's EU accession process is closely linked to its willingness to resolve long-standing disputes with Kosovo through dialogue and constructive engagement.

Beyond relations with Kosovo, the European Parliament also highlighted growing concerns over Serbia's domestic political climate. EU lawmakers emphasized that the country must guarantee free and fair elections, describing democratic electoral processes as essential for overcoming the ongoing political crisis.

According to the European Parliament, credible elections are vital to restoring public trust in institutions and ensuring long-term political stability. The institution reiterated that respect for democratic principles, judicial independence, media freedom, and the rule of law remain fundamental conditions for any country seeking to join the European Union.

The latest statement reinforces the EU's longstanding position that Serbia's European future depends not only on economic reforms but also on its adherence to democratic values and its commitment to achieving lasting normalization with Kosovo.
