Air tourism is driving a new wave of international visitors to Gjirokastër, as Albania’s historic “Stone City” expands its tourism offer through aviation experiences, direct sport flights, and extreme air sports.
The growing development of aviation tourism has transformed Gjirokastër’s tourist-sport airport into an emerging destination for air travel enthusiasts, adventure tourists, and international visitors. Over the weekend, sport aircraft brought tourists directly from Italy, marking another step in Albania’s efforts to diversify its tourism sector beyond traditional cultural and coastal destinations.
Visitors and aviation professionals described the experience as unforgettable. Alessandro Romanaci Carducci, President of Aeroclub Bari, said it was his third visit to Gjirokastër, calling the aerial views of southern Albania “spectacular” and the flying experience “extraordinary.” International tourists arriving on the flights also praised Albania’s hospitality and the unique beauty of the region.
Officials say the initiative serves two strategic goals: promoting civil aviation in Albania and strengthening tourism through high-value experiences. According to Albanian Civil Aviation representatives, the airfield now supports parachuting, skydiving, and sport aviation events, offering tourists new ways to experience the landscape while attracting aviation athletes from across Europe.
Already recognized as a Gjirokastër, the city is now adding aviation events to its historic appeal, blending culture, adventure, and international tourism. Local authorities believe air tourism could become a major driver of regional economic growth and international visibility for southern Albania.
