Albanian Prisoners in Corfu Protest Dire Conditions and Discrimination

Albanian prisoners held in Corfu Prison have staged a protest, alleging severe human rights violations, scandalous living conditions, and systematic discrimination due to their ethnicity. They claim to be denied basic necessities such as adequate food and water, and report being obstructed from accessing legal rights pertinent to temporary releases and parole.

The protesting inmates assert that they are treated unfavorably compared to their Greek counterparts, who allegedly receive preferential treatment and privileges within the prison system.

In a dramatic escalation of the protest, one Albanian prisoner reportedly set fire to his cell. Following this act, he was allegedly subjected to violence by prison guards and received death threats.

Images circulating from the prison appear to corroborate the prisoners' claims, depicting the harsh and unacceptable conditions in which the Albanian detainees are being held.

The prisoners are urgently appealing to the Albanian Ministry of Justice and the Albanian Embassy in Greece to intervene on their behalf and advocate for their fundamental human rights.
