200 Albanian prisoners will be transferred from Great Britain to Albania to serve the rest of their sentences.
The agreement was reached during the discussions of the two prime ministers Rishi Sunak and Edi Rama during the talks in London in March of this year, Euronews reports.
At the end of last year, there were 1336 Albanians in prisons in England and Wales.
The reason for this agreement is related to two factors, the economic one and prison overcrowding.
17 prisoners who are sentenced to life imprisonment will be the first to be transferred to Albania.
Koci Selamaj is one of the prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of the teacher Sabina Nessa and who will be repatriated.
For a prisoner in a high security prison, the cost in Great Britain for a year is 57,000 pounds, while in Albania it is 10,000 pounds per year. It will be London that will pay for serving the sentence for prisoners in Albanian prisons, but now at a lower cost.
According to the agreement, an Albanian prisoner is released from prison a year early and given 1,500 pounds if he agrees to be deported and never return to Britain.
