Skopje, May 27, 2020 - The Council of the Islamic Religious Community (CIRC) in North Macedonia fired on Wednesday its chairman, Sulejman Rexhepi.

In the statement read by the mufti of Gostivar, Shaqir Fetahu, it is said that Rexhepi was dismissed due to violation of the Constitution of CIRC, respectively the Article 36.

In this article, among other things, it is stated that the chairman of CIRC is dismissed when “he does not fulfill the obligations for which he was elected; when his attitude and work are contrary to Islamic norms and normative acts of CIRC; when he works against provisions and decisions of the competent bodies of the CIRC; when he abuses its position to the detriment of the interests of the BFI ”.

We remind that Rexhepi got married the last week with a girl 50-years younger than him and withdrew 1 million euros from the account of the Muslim Community.

The decision to dismiss Rexhepi comes after a series of actions by Rexhepi, which have provoked reactions in the general public, including the personal act of marriage.

Numerous reactions in the public have caused a statement by Rexhepi during the Eid holiday, this week, when he said that the coronavirus is dead.

"As of today, the COVID-19 disease [caused by coronavirus] is pronounced dead. God is with us and when God is with us, we are stronger," Rexhepi said.

This statement was strongly opposed by the heads of health institutions, who demanded caution from such assessments, which could have serious consequences for the public.

Until the election of the new CIRC chairman, it was decided that the position of chairman of the Islamic Religious Community of North Macedonia will be exercised by the Mufti of Gostivar, Shaqir Fetahu.
