F-16 jets of Greece, Athens sign with Lockheed Martin for technical upgrades

The Official Athens has signed an agreement with the US company Lockheed Martin, aimed at technical upgrading over the next seven years of its F-16 fighter jets.

It is about 84 F-16 jets that will be upgraded until 2027 by catching the highest level Viper in a program that will cost $ 1.5 billion.

The agreement includes, inter alia, programs related to meeting the needs and strengthening the operational capability and readiness of the Armed Forces by providing materials, equipment, services and developing their infrastructures, production of aircraft components, installation of facilities where they will have the processes, and testing of electronic systems.

The agreement, which has also been approved by the Greek parliament, comes amid a period of intense diplomatic and geostrategic tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean with Turkey, which is also implicated in the crisis in Libya.

Just the past week, according to the Greek Ministry of Defense sources, nearly 120 violations of Greek airspace by Turkish military aircraft were intercepted and tracked by Greek aircraft, at a critical juncture in the escalation of EEA claims in the Aegean and the Mediterranean., when Athens estimates that Ankara wants more than ever a heated incident between the two countries.
