Albanian Government opens competition of concession for Kukes Airport

The government has opened the race for the concession of the Kukes Airport. It was the merge of the companies "Kastrati" and "T.M.D Systems" that has officially expressed interest in seeking the concession and the government has rewarded with a bonus in the race being held on the basis of the project presented.

If there are no new expressions of interest or if other bidders are disqualified, then at the end of this year the companies "Kastrati" and "T.M.D Systems will take the concession of the Kukes Airport for 35 years.

Sources told to Oculus News that the total investment amounts to 6.8 million euros. With this money will be extended the runway, the enlargement of the terminal building, the construction of storage and parking areas, the erection of a petrol station for aircraft and the purchase of airport equipment. The airport will be intended to function as an airport for low cost carriers.
Concession-seeking societies have studied passenger traffic in the northern areas of Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro, with special focus on migrants coming from these areas.

Kukes Airport has completed its construction in 2005, but until now the wheels of no airplane have touched its runway. The green light operation was opened after the 2016 change to the concession agreement for the Rinas airport, which did not allowed international flights from other airports in Albania.
