Eric Wendt Begins Mission as New U.S. Ambassador to Albania, Meets Rama

The new United States Ambassador to Albania, Eric Wendt, has begun his first official meetings in Tirana following the start of his diplomatic mission, including a meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Wendt officially began his mission on September 26, when he presented his credentials to Albanian President Bajram Begaj. Following the ceremony, Begaj held a one-on-one meeting with the newly appointed U.S. ambassador.

His meeting with Rama is among Wendt’s first political contacts with senior Albanian officials since arriving in Tirana and marks the beginning of his diplomatic engagement with the Albanian government.

Wendt’s arrival also marks the return of a formally appointed U.S. ambassador to Albania after more than three years. During this period, the U.S. Embassy in Tirana was led by Chargé d’Affaires Nancy VanHorn following the end of Yuri Kim’s tenure.

The new ambassador brings a strong military and security background to the post. He has served for more than three decades in the U.S. military and held senior positions related to special operations and international security.

Security cooperation is expected to remain an important part of the U.S.-Albanian relationship during Wendt’s tenure. Other issues on the agenda include the fight against corruption and organized crime, as well as strengthening bilateral cooperation between Washington and Tirana.

Wendt’s appointment comes at a time when Albania remains an important U.S. partner in the Western Balkans, with cooperation extending across security, NATO, regional stability and institutional reforms.
