Frontex and Eurojust bring Albania closer to the EU

  Albania signed a co-operation agreement with the EU on justice and border management. In this way Albania becomes the first country in the region, not a member of the EU, to sign an agreement with Frontex.

With these two concrete and historic results, concludet in Tirana on Friday (5.10.2018) among the EU-BP Ministerial for Justice and Home Affairs. With the newly signed agreement on justice, Albania becomes the third country in the Western Balkans, along with Macedonia and Montenegro, to co-operate with Eurojust (European Union's Judicial Cooperation). While with the other agreement, signed with the European Agency for the Protection of the Border and Coastal Zone (Frontex), Albania becomes the first country in the region, not a member, with which the EU has signed such an agreement.

For a safer Europe

The agreement between Albania and Eurojust foresees operational and strategic cooperation in the judiciary for a more effective fight against transnational crime. Eurojust President Ladislav Hamran said after the signing of the agreement that "it will open all possibilities for Albania to participate and benefit from all the practical cooperation instruments provided by Eurojust to bring the suspects to justice and protect the citizens. Only together we can make Europe a safer place. "

The Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj, who signed the agreement for the Albanian side, stressed that "the agreement will strengthen the cooperation with the two partner countries in the region, Macedonia and Montenegro, contributing to joint results in the fight against organized crime, terrorism and corruption as well as will increase confidence in Albania's investigative capacities by bringing the country closer to the EU."
