Flow of tourists on Maligrad Island in Prespa - a little paradise in these hot Summer days

MAligrad island

 The island of Maligrad is located in the Lake of Prespa e Madhe, as a giant paradise in the middle of the Lake and in these hot Summer days there are plenty of visitors.

On its western shore is located the Cave of the Church, which for its special and strange form is called a holy place. There was built an old Church of the nineteenth century XIV.

It is one of the most valuable monuments of Albanian cultural heritage. On this Island are found archaeological objects such as tiles, columns, and capitals belonging to a Paleochristian Church, thought to have been on the upper side of the Lake, have been found on this island. Above this island are located the ruins of the summer villa of Car Simeon of the XI century.

St. Mary's Church is an old establishment and has served as a spiritual center for Albanian leaders. The inscriptions found in this church belong to different periods related to the history of this monument.

An inscription on the southern side, the earliest in this church dates back to 1345 and the first phase of embellishment of this church with frescoes.

The island is about 800 meters long and about 200 meters wide and is surrounded by very steep slopes, except for its western part. On this island there are natural herbaceous vegetation and very few shrubs, caves and karst holes.

Local residents go there on boats with the purpose of religious services.

The island is not inhabited but is populated in the summer season by many curious tourists of local history and culture.

It can be visited by following the Korca - Zvezde - Liqenas route. To embark on the island are used fishermen's boats or recently tourist ones. Boating on the Lake is another curiosity for many visitors. Prespa in the hot season attracts tourists from the area around for beach reasons in the Lake waters, but also remote tourists who are interested in history, culture, biodiversity and for the gastronomy of this area./Oculus News
